Stronger Than Yesterday "Life, Leadership, & Money"

User Rating:  / 8

There are so many attributes that make up a great leader; integrity, work ethic, perseverance, and attitude just to name a few. However, I feel like the single most important quality a leader can have is a strong desire for self-development. Leadership is a lot like a golf swing in that it will never be perfected. In the Christmas of 2010 my wife and I were celebrating our first Christmas in our new home about two hours from where we both grew up. I was so excited because I had gotten her an IPAD (although in hindsight the time she spent making a wonderful dinner compared to the time she spent playing angry birds may have made that purchase a mistake). Anyway, when she opened it up she burst into tears talking about how blessed we are and how handsome I am. Ok I made that last part up but she really did love the present.

Low and behold 4 months later comes the IPAD 2 and guess who’s old, slow, bulky, outdated IPAD didn’t bring tears anymore? You guessed it! Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying she doesn’t appreciate everything she has because she does and works very hard for it – I’m just pointing out that in our world today everything changes very rapidly and because of that you have to treat your mind the same way. So how do we continue to motivate ourselves? To be 1% better than we were the day before? As one of my favorite people in the world says, “Motivation doesn’t last, but neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend both daily.” – Zig Ziglar So here is what I do to make sure I continue to grow.

1. Surround yourself with the right people
Do you want to lose weight? Find the fittest person you know and take them to lunch. Don’t worry about the cost, they won’t eat much anyway! Do you want to be the top salesman at your firm? Find out who is doing that already and listen to what strategies work for them. Do you want to have a stronger marriage? Find a couple who has been married for 40 years and still look at each other like newlyweds. If you want to be at the top, start acting like the people that are already there! But heed my warning – it is MUCH easier to find complainers than it is winners. If all you hear every day is, “the little man can’t get ahead”, “I just don’t think we can make it in this economy”, “I don’t think I’ll ever be happy with my spouse” you will start to believe it! Start weeding these people out of your life today and model your life after people you admire.

2. Leaders are Readers
If you are reading this article you’ve probably already found this to be true. If you found this just because you were skimming the interest and have met me before take this into consideration. I can’t remember who said it but I’ve heard a quote before that goes something to the nature of. “30 years from now you’ll be the exact same person except for the people you’ve met and the books you have read.” I read something from someone who has forgotten more than I’ll ever know about life every morning. Here are just a few books I would highly recommend for you.

  • Dave Ramsey- Entreleadership (a must read for any small business owner)
  • Jon Acuff- Quitter (not sure what you want to do with the rest of your life, Jon makes it easy to find your passion)
  • Zig Ziglar- Born To Win (you just can’t beat Zig’s motivation)
  • Joel Osteen- Every Day A Friday (Just about anything Joel has written is great, this just happens to be his newest one. You can’t help but walk around with a smile after reading his books. )
  • Andy Andrews- The Traveler’s Gift (Please, Please, Please, get this book. If you don’t have a five dollars to your name go to the library. Do whatever it takes to get your hands on this book! The single best thing I’ve ever read and will change your life forever. This book is never more than an arm reach away from me)

So these are just two things you can use to help you reach your potential. Find the people you want to be and model after what they are doing! Obviously if you want to be a real estate icon like Donald Trump you aren’t just going to call him to have a quick burger at Five Guys. So read his book! Don’t ever stop learning, don’t ever stop growing, because I can promise you this- You are NEVER NEUTRAL, you are either moving forward or going in reverse. Take note of where your life is going today and put it in the right direction.

All the best,

Tyler Bullington
